Ulcer Diet

Ulcer diet

Today, we know that 99% of ulcers are caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. In addition, it is noted that the regular intake of aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs results in adverse gastrointestinal effects. To prevent ulcers, it is necessary to focus on simple meals, eat and drink slowly. One should allow two to three hours for digestion before going to bed.

Many factors exacerbate the gastro-esophageal reflux and this causes discomfort and burns. This applies to tobacco and alcohol, coffee, tea, soft drinks cola in excessive consumption, most foods rich in fat (fried foods, meats, whole milk, the cheese, rich sauces and fatty meats), stress, taking anti-inflammatories and corticosteroids. All these elements are to be avoided when the ulcer is diagnosed. Be sure to follow a balanced diet, focusing on fiber and avoiding too much fatty food or too spicy.

In case of ulcers caused by anti-inflammatory drugs

The doctor will probably tell you to stop taking the anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This is usually enough to remove the ulcer, but usually he also prescribes an antihistamine H2 or an inhibitor of the proton pump for a few weeks. Other drugs are less harmful to the stomach and can be used instead, such as acetaminophen. The extent of the risks and benefits associated with NSAID use is evaluated by the physician.

Ulcer diet and lifestyle

In addition to taking medications, it is also very important to change certain lifestyle habits, like smoking or drinking, which damage the lining of the digestive tract. The medical treatment of the ulcer may require a special diet prescribed by the doctor, calling, excluding or limiting certain foods.

Only in case of failure of drug therapy or if complications occur, such as a complete perforation of the bowel wall by the ulcer or gastrointestinal obstruction, a surgery is required.

Ulcer diet and monitoring

At the end of treatment, we can ensure the healing of the ulcer by endoscopy (direct visualization of the gastrointestinal tract made using a fiberscope). Maintenance therapy with a duration of 4 to 6 months may be prescribed to prevent the emergence of a new ulcer.
